The Archive

Housed in a section of the Schloss Fasanerie are the library and archives of the Hessian princely family. The holdings date back to an initiative from Landgrave Philipp (1896-1980) and were instituted at the time of the museum’s foundation in 1951.
Among the family archives is the written legacy of Landgrave Friedrich von Hessen-Kassel (1747-1806) and those of his descendants, over six generations up to the present. Also included are files of electorate provenience, such as the memoirs of Elector Wilhelm I (1743-1821), as well as the files of the courts of the landgrave that are expanded by the administrative files of the former Hessian Electoral House Foundation established in 1928.
With the inheritance of the Herrschaft Hessenstein in 1845, its collection of files also became part of the Family Archive.
Comprising its own department is the correspondence of Victoria, Empress (Kaiserin) Friedrich (1840-1901), which came into the family archive as part of the estate of her youngest daughter, Landgravine Margarethe von Hessen (1872-1954).



In addition to the written documents is an extensive collection of drawings, cards, photographs, and portraits of the family.

The use of the library and private archive for research purposes is possible only by written request and permission granted by the Foundation’s executive board.
